Why Koh Lipe Deserves the Hype
Tucked into the far southwest corner of Thailand, Koh Lipe is a small inhabited island in Satun province and part of the protected Tarutao National Marine Park. Three Beaches, Three Vibes
- Pattaya Beach — The main arrival point on the south side, lined with longtail boats, restaurants and beach bars. This is where most of the action happens. (Not to be confused with Pattaya on the Gulf of Thailand.)
- Sunrise Beach — The east coast stunner. Calm, shallow water and direct views of the sunrise make it the most popular stretch for snorkelling and relaxing.
- Sunset Beach — A quieter, rockier cove on the west side. Grab a drink at one of the low-key bars and watch the sun drop behind Koh Adang.
The island is small enough to walk across in about 20 minutes, so you can easily sample all three beaches in a single day.
Things to Do
Snorkelling and diving are the main draws. Healthy coral reefs start just off Sunrise Beach, and boat trips to surrounding islands like Koh Rok and Koh Adang reveal even richer marine life. Beyond the water, Walking Street is a narrow pedestrian lane that runs across the island, packed with restaurants, tattoo studios, souvenir shops and Thai massage parlours. It comes alive after dark with cheap seafood barbecues and live music.
Best Time to Visit
The high season runs from November to April, when seas are calm and visibility is excellent. Ferry services operate at full capacity during this period, with boats arriving from Pak Bara on the mainland, Koh Lanta and Langkawi in Malaysia.
During the monsoon months of May to October, some resorts close and ferry options become limited, though year-round boat services have improved in recent years. How to Get There
Most travellers reach Koh Lipe via speedboat from Pak Bara pier in Satun province, a journey of roughly 90 minutes. To reach Pak Bara you can fly to Hat Yai airport and take a minivan (about two hours) or travel overland from Krabi or Trang.
An increasingly popular option is the ferry from Langkawi, Malaysia, which takes about 90 minutes and lets you combine two countries in one trip. Koh Lipe is pricier than some Thai islands because everything arrives by boat, but it is still very affordable by international standards.
