Staying in Phuket for a month or longer? Daily renting for 30 days quickly costs $1,500–2,000 — but a monthly contract sits at $400–1,200 for the same car. Here's how long-term rates actually work, what insurance you need, and when a local Phuket operator beats an aggregator for extended stays.

Three contract types — which fits you?
Long-term pricing works differently from daily rates. Tax, mileage caps and insurance all look different.
Aggregator monthly booking (28–90 days)
Discover Cars and Trip.com auto-show the monthly rate when you select 28+ days. Unlimited mileage, full cover available via aggregator add-on, payment upfront or at pickup. Best for 1–3 months. Example: Yaris in May 2026, 30 days, $480 including full cover.
Local monthly contract (1–6 months)
Phuket operators like Bizcar, Phuket Cheap Car Rental or Suzy offer direct monthly contracts with cash or bank-transfer payment. 10–20% cheaper than aggregator, but excess often higher (30,000–50,000 THB) unless you add extra insurance. Always get a written contract.
Lease (3–12 months, expat route)
For expats staying 6+ months. Requires Thai work or retirement visa + local bank account. Around $300–500/month for a Yaris, but you pay 20% VAT upfront plus a 1-month deposit. Not recommended for tourists — too much paperwork.
Insurance on long rentals — different from daily
On 1+ month rentals insurance becomes more important. A damage event on day 25 of a 30-day rental often means you go without a car for 5 days while they repair.
What basic insurance does NOT cover long-term
Standard Thai insurance covers third-party and the car at minimum. Excess 30,000–50,000 THB stays. Tires, windows, roof, and lost keys are typically NOT covered — over a month, the chance of one of these events is significant. Specifically ask about tire/glass coverage.
Full Cover vs Super Cover on long-term
Full Cover (Discover Cars / aggregator add-on): excess to zero, covers theft + collision. Costs $8–15/day — that's $240–450 over 30 days. Super Cover (some locals): adds tires, glass, keys, costs $15–25/day. On 2+ month stays, Super often pays for itself.
Travel insurance vs car insurance
Your travel or expat insurance usually does NOT cover rental car excess, despite marketing claims. Read the policy. For digital nomads: SafetyWing and World Nomads explicitly exclude rental car liability. Always treat the aggregator insurance as primary coverage.
Long-term booking tips
- →Always book 28 or 30 days, not 27. The monthly price break starts at 28+ days on most platforms. 27 days gets charged 27× daily (50% pricier).
- →Ask about extension pricing upfront: if you might extend, ask at pickup whether the rate is locked. Last-minute extensions can cost 30% extra or get "no car available" in high season.
- →Maintenance servicing is included on multi-month contracts. Good operators include one service stop on 3+ month rentals (oil, tire check). Ask explicitly — otherwise you may be on the hook for maintenance.
- →Check the monthly mileage cap. Most aggregator monthly rates are unlimited. Locals sometimes set 3,000–5,000 km/month caps. 5,000 km = 167 km/day — fine for island use, tight for trips to Krabi/Phang Nga.
- →Payment: avoid 100% upfront with locals. Spread it: 30–50% deposit at pickup, balance mid-contract or at return. Protects you if the operator goes under (happened twice in 2024 on Phuket).
- →Drop-off location can change. On 3+ month rentals you can often switch return location (HKT, Patong, Phuket Town) for free. Ask at booking — saves $30–60 later.

Frequently asked questions — long-term
How many days qualify for monthly rates?
28 or 30 days on aggregators (Discover Cars: 28, Trip.com: 30). Between 8–27 days you get a "weekly+" rate roughly 30% below daily, but not as good as monthly. Renting 27 days is almost always pricier than 30 — book 30 even if you only need 27.
Can I pay cash on a long rental?
International brands (Avis/Hertz/Budget): no, credit card required for the deposit. Local Phuket operators: usually yes, but the deposit remains (cash 20,000–30,000 THB or bank transfer). Aggregators sit in between — some operators accept bank transfer for the rental but require credit card for the deposit hold.
What if I want to keep the car longer?
Extend at least 7 days before the return date. In high season (Nov–Apr) there's no guarantee the same car stays available. Aggregators usually show the live extension price in your account — could be higher or lower than your original monthly rate. With locals: rate usually stays, but confirm in writing.
Do I need a Thai license on a 6+ month stay?
Strictly: yes, after 90 days of residence. Practically: police rarely check this with tourists in a Yaris/Brio. But your insurance can void on accident. For 6+ month stays: get the Thai license (5-day course, ~3,000 THB at DLT in Phuket Town). Valid 2 years.
What happens if there's damage mid-way through a 3-month rental?
With Full Cover: operators usually swap the car within 24–48 hours. Without Full Cover: you pay the repair up to excess, and go without a car until repair is done (typically 5–10 working days for body damage). On a 3-month rental, losing 7 days of mobility alone justifies the Full Cover cost.
