## Overview Namtok Phlio National Park is Chanthaburi's most popular natural attraction — a stunning waterfall cascading into a crystal-clear pool just 15 km from the city center. The pool is so transparent you can watch enormous carp — some over a meter long — swimming lazily beneath the surface, fed by visitors for decades until they have grown to remarkable size. Surrounded by lush tropical forest, the park combines easy accessibility with genuine natural beauty. ## History The national park was established in 1975, covering 135 square kilometers of tropical forest in the coastal hills south of Chanthaburi. The area holds deep royal significance: King Rama V (Chulalongkorn) visited the waterfall with Queen Sunanda Kumariratana, and after her tragic death in 1880 he built a memorial chedi near the falls in her honor. This royal memorial, set among ancient trees beside the water, remains one of the most poignant historical sites in eastern Thailand. ## What to See The main Phlio Waterfall is an easy 10-minute walk from the park entrance along a well-maintained path through shaded forest. The waterfall drops several meters into the famous pool where hundreds of giant carp congregate — you can watch them from the rocks above or walk right to the water's edge. The King Rama V memorial chedi sits on a raised platform nearby, surrounded by old-growth trees. Several walking trails branch deeper into the forest for those wanting more exercise, and picnic areas with tables and shelters are scattered throughout the grounds. ## Practical Info Admission is 200 THB for adult foreigners and 100 THB for children under 15. Parking costs 20 THB. The park is open from 08:00 to 16:30. Located just 15 km from Chanthaburi town, it is easily reached by songthaew, taxi, or private vehicle.
