Rab Ro Canal Mangrove

Rab Ro Canal Mangrove

## Overview Rab Ro Canal is a scenic mangrove waterway near the Chumphon coast that offers one of the province's most memorable nature experiences. The canal winds through dense mangrove forest where overhanging trees form natural green tunnels above the water, creating a shaded and atmospheric paddling route. This is genuine off-the-beaten-track Chumphon, virtually unknown to international tourists but quietly popular among Thai nature enthusiasts and bird watchers. ## Kayaking Through the Mangroves Local guides operate inexpensive kayak tours through the canal's winding channels, typically costing between 200 and 400 THB per person for a one to two hour paddling trip. The guides navigate through narrow passages and under arching mangrove roots, pointing out wildlife along the way. The calm, sheltered water makes kayaking here suitable for beginners and families with older children. Kayaks are usually two-person sit-on-top models that are stable and easy to handle even without experience. ## Wildlife The mangrove ecosystem along Rab Ro Canal supports a rich variety of wildlife. Crab-eating macaques are commonly seen swinging through the waterside trees, and the canal is an excellent spot for bird watching with regular sightings of kingfishers, white-bellied sea eagles, and various heron species. Monitor lizards bask on muddy banks and occasionally swim across the canal. Mudskippers, fiddler crabs, and other mangrove-dwelling creatures are visible in the exposed roots during lower tides. The early morning hours offer the best wildlife viewing before the heat of the day drives animals into deeper shade. ## Practical Information Rab Ro Canal is open for kayaking tours daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with no entrance fee beyond the cost of the guided kayak tour. The canal is located near the coast west of Chumphon town and is reachable in about 20 minutes by car. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent. Waterproof bags or cases for phones and cameras are highly recommended as splashing is inevitable. The best time to visit is during the cool season from November to February when temperatures are comfortable and wildlife is most active....
