Hidden Gems

Sam Phan Bok (3000 Holes)

"A spectacular section of the Mekong riverbed that reveals thousands of eroded rock holes and turquoise pools during the dry season. Often called the Grand Canyon of Thailand, this geological wonder is best visited from December to May."

Wat Sirindhorn Wararam (Glow Temple)

"A modern temple whose exterior walls are painted with fluorescent murals depicting the Bodhi tree and mythical creatures. After dark, the paintings glow an eerie green, creating one of the most unique temple experiences in Thailand."

Best Restaurants

Rung Rot Dee (Ratchabut Road)

Isaan

A legendary Isaan restaurant famous for its larb moo (spicy minced pork salad) and som tam pla ra (papaya salad with fermented fish). The flavors are fiercely authentic and the prices are wonderfully low. Busy with locals every evening.

Kai Yang Wat Jaeng

Isaan Grilled Chicken

The most famous grilled chicken in Ubon, marinated in lemongrass and garlic and slow-grilled over charcoal. Served with sticky rice and a tangy jaew dipping sauce. A half chicken costs just 60-80 baht.

Indochine Restaurant

Thai-Vietnamese-French

A charming restaurant in a restored colonial-era building near the Mun River, serving a fusion of Thai, Vietnamese, and French cuisine. The baguette sandwiches and Vietnamese coffee reflect Ubon's cross-border influences.

Night Market Sai Krok Isaan Stalls

Street Food

The fermented sausage (sai krok Isaan) vendors at the night market serve these tangy, slightly sour pork-and-rice sausages grilled to perfection. Eaten with fresh ginger, chili, and peanuts β€” a quintessential Isaan snack for 20-30 baht.

Mun River Terrace Restaurants

Thai

Several riverside restaurants along the Mun River serve excellent Thai food with beautiful sunset views. Try the pla chon lui suan (snake-head fish with herbs) and enjoy the breeze off the water as the lights of the city reflect on the surface.

Recommended Hotels

Sunee Grand Hotel

$$

Tohsang Khongjiam Resort

$$$

A riverside resort at the confluence of the Mun and Mekong rivers in Khong Jiam, about 75 km from the city. Stunning river views, traditional Isaan architecture, and a perfect base for visiting Pha Taem and Sam Phan Bok.

Outside Inn

$

A quirky and welcoming guesthouse popular with the few backpackers who make it to Ubon. The owner is a wealth of local knowledge and can arrange transport to Pha Taem and Sam Phan Bok. Clean rooms and a social atmosphere.

Ubon Hotel

$

A reliable budget hotel in the city center near the bus station and night market. No-frills rooms with air conditioning and hot water. The central location makes it easy to explore the city without transport.

Travel Tips

  • Sam Phan Bok is only visible when the Mekong water level is low β€” visit between December and May. The rock formations are most spectacular in January-March. During rainy season (June-November), the site is completely submerged.
  • The Candle Festival falls on Asanha Bucha Day in July (exact date varies yearly by lunar calendar). Book accommodation well in advance β€” the city fills up completely. The parade typically runs along Upparat Road in the morning.
  • Pha Taem and Sam Phan Bok are 70-100 km from the city with limited public transport. Rent a car (800-1,200 THB/day) or hire a driver through your hotel. The roads are good but the distances require a full day for each site.
