The Trat Community Forest boardwalk near Laem Ngop offers an easy introduction to this ecosystem, with information boards explaining how the mangroves protect the coastline and nurture fish populations. My final morning, I visited the gem market in neighboring Chanthaburi, a thirty-minute drive north, where Sri Lankan, Indian, and Thai traders negotiate over sapphires and rubies in a riverside bazaar that feels like a scene from another century. Trat province, I realized, is Thailand's quiet eastern frontier: less polished than the south, more authentic than anywhere near Bangkok, and blessed with islands that still feel like genuine discoveries.
