Within thirty seconds, a bold juvenile had swiped a corn cob from a startled vendor and was feasting on a power line overhead. Welcome to Lopburi, the monkey city of Thailand, where several thousand crab-eating macaques rule the old town like tiny, furry landlords.

The heart of the monkey kingdom is Prang Sam Yot, the stunning 13th-century Khmer temple that rises in three interconnected towers above the railway roundabout. Built as a Hindu shrine and later converted to Buddhist use, its laterite and sandstone prangs are magnificent examples of Bayon-style architecture, but most visitors come for the spectacle: hundreds of macaques swinging from every ledge, scampering through window openings, and posing for photos with tourists who have purchased bags of sunflower seeds from local vendors. I tucked my sunglasses into my bag, having been warned that the monkeys are expert thieves, and spent a fascinated hour watching their social dynamics play out against a backdrop of ancient stone.

The town itself has a sleepy, authentic charm that feels refreshingly untouched by mass tourism. Beneath the monkey antics lies a city that has been continuously inhabited for over a thousand years, from Dvaravati through Khmer to Ayutthaya periods. The sunflower fields that surround the city in November and December create a golden landscape that has become a photography destination in its own right. Lopburi may be a day trip from Bangkok for most visitors, but those who stay overnight discover a quiet provincial town with genuine warmth and a history that runs as deep as anywhere in Thailand.
