The air smelled of charcoal-grilled chicken and sticky rice, the streets were wide and leafy, and the morning light fell on a cityscape of graceful temples, French colonial-era shop houses, and the broad brown sweep of the Mun River. Nobody tried to sell me anything. Nobody called me friend. I was, for once, simply somewhere.

The city's crown jewel is the annual Candle Festival, or Khao Phansa, held each July to mark the beginning of Buddhist Lent.
