Welcome to Lopburi, the monkey city of Thailand, where several thousand crab-eating macaques rule the old town like tiny, furry landlords.

The heart of the monkey kingdom is Prang Sam Yot, the stunning 13th-century Khmer temple that rises in three interconnected towers above the railway roundabout. Built as a Hindu shrine and later converted to Buddhist use, its laterite and sandstone prangs are magnificent examples of Bayon-style architecture, but most visitors come for the spectacle: hundreds of macaques swinging from every ledge, scampering through window openings, and posing for photos with tourists who have purchased bags of sunflower seeds from local vendors.
