On Yommarat Road I discovered a row of converted shophouses turned into independent coffee roasters and vintage bookshops that could rival anything in Chiang Mai. And yet step around the corner and you are in a traditional Isaan market where women weave silk on wooden looms and vendors sell freshwater fish paste from clay pots. Korat does not try to be anything other than what it is: a proud, prosperous Thai city that happens to sit at the crossroads of ancient Khmer civilization, wild jungle, and the vast Isaan heartland.
