I arrived on the overnight sleeper from Bangkok — twelve hours through the flat Isaan heartland — and stepped out into a city that felt entirely unlike the Thailand most tourists know. The air smelled of charcoal-grilled chicken and sticky rice, the streets were wide and leafy, and the morning light fell on a cityscape of graceful temples, French colonial-era shop houses, and the broad brown sweep of the Mun River. The city's crown jewel is the annual Candle Festival, or Khao Phansa, held each July to mark the beginning of Buddhist Lent.
