Back on the mainland, Mae Ramphueng Beach surprised me with its length and emptiness. The Khao Laem Ya-Mu Ko Samet National Park protects both the island and a beautiful stretch of rocky mainland coast with tide pools, viewpoints, and easy hiking trails. On my last evening, I sat on the rocks at the Khao Laem Ya headland watching the sun sink into the Gulf of Thailand, fishing boats silhouetted against the amber sky, and thought that sometimes the best destinations in Thailand are the ones nobody tells you about.
