Durian Season in Thailand 2026: Where to Eat the King of Fruits
When Is Durian Season?
Durian starts appearing at Thai markets around March, but the real season runs from May through August. June is widely considered the sweet spot β pun intended β when the fruit reaches peak ripeness and flavour. If you are planning a trip specifically for durian, aim for late May or June for the widest selection and best prices. Use our best time to visit Thailand guide to plan around the season.
Outside of peak season, you can still find durian in supermarkets and at speciality vendors, but the variety and freshness will not match what is available in summer. Another beloved summer fruit is mango sticky rice, which also peaks around the same time.
Best Places to Eat Durian in Bangkok
Bangkok makes it easy to try durian without leaving the city.
Or Tor Kor Market is the go-to destination for high-quality Thai fruit. Located next to Chatuchak Weekend Market and accessible via BTS Mo Chit, it stocks premium durian varieties neatly portioned and ready to eat. Prices are higher than street vendors, but the quality is consistently excellent. For a broader overview of the area's food scene, see the Chatuchak market food guide.
Chinatown (Yaowarat) is another hotspot. Durian sellers set up along the streets until late at night, and prices here tend to be lower than elsewhere in Bangkok. Bargaining is acceptable. If you want to explore more of Bangkok's street food, the Bangkok Lumpini hawker centre and the best street food markets in Bangkok are excellent alternatives.
During the season, virtually every Bangkok supermarket β from Tops to Big C β will stock pre-packaged durian sections. Convenient if you want to try it without committing to a whole fruit. For getting around the city to reach these spots, see the Bangkok public transport guide.
Chanthaburi: Thailand's Durian Capital
The eastern province of Chanthaburi produces more durian than any other part of Thailand. The annual Chanthaburi Fruit Festival, typically held in May, is a celebration of the region's agricultural heritage. Expect durian prices significantly lower than Bangkok, along with mangosteen, rambutan and other tropical fruit at their peak. While you are there, the Chanthaburi gem market and old town are well worth a visit, and the Chanthaburi fruit orchards are a short drive from town.
Chanthaburi is about a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Bangkok β a natural day trip from Bangkok. You can also take a bus from Ekkamai Bus Terminal. If you decide to stay overnight, check the best hotels in Chanthaburi.
Rayong: The All-You-Can-Eat Experience
For something more immersive, head to Suan Supatra Land in Rayong Province. This orchard offers a durian buffet where fruit is shelled and presented for unlimited eating. It is a popular day trip from Bangkok or Pattaya and one of the best ways to try multiple durian varieties side by side.
Varieties to Look For
Thailand grows dozens of durian cultivars. The most prized is Monthong ("golden pillow"), which has thick, creamy flesh and a mild sweetness that appeals to first-timers. Chanee is more pungent and beloved by serious durian fans. Kanyao (long-stem) is a premium variety from Nonthaburi province that can command prices of several thousand baht per fruit. Rules to Remember
Durian is banned from most hotels, the BTS and MRT, and many taxis. The smell is intense and lingers. Eat it outdoors at the market where you buy it, or in a park. Do not attempt to smuggle one into your hotel room β staff will know.
