Mu Ko Chumphon National Park
View on Google MapsI woke before dawn to catch a longtail boat from Pak Nam Chumphon to the Mu Ko Chumphon archipelago, an experience that changed my perspective on national parks entirely. The park encompasses 13 pristine islands with crystal-clear waters, coral reefs teeming with tropical fish, and white sandy beaches untouched by development. Arriving at Koh Lak, the largest island, I was stunned by how few people shared this slice of paradise. The underwater world revealed itself immediately—snorkeling just meters from shore, I encountered schools of parrotfish, giant groupers, and coral formations that seemed to glow from within. The park rangers are knowledgeable and genuinely invested in conservation, sharing stories about sea turtle nesting programs and reef restoration. I hiked the island trails between snorkeling sessions, discovering hidden coves and viewpoints overlooking the entire archipelago. The main facilities cluster around Koh Lak's eastern shore, with basic bungalows and a restaurant serving fresh-caught seafood.
