Trang
travel guide

4-day editorial route
Trang is the Andaman coast's most authentic province — where the fishing community still outnumbers the tourists, where breakfast means a 6 AM queue at a Chinese shophouse for roast pork and dim sum, and where an 80-meter swim through a sea cave reveals a hidden lagoon that no road could ever reach. Four to five days is the sweet spot: enough time for city dim sum culture, the Emerald Cave, a Koh Kradan beach day, and cave kayaking — all without feeling rushed. This guide covers the practical details.

Start with a decision

What job should Trang do in your trip?

Treat the itinerary as a sequence, not a checklist. Keep arrival and departure friction visible, cluster places by area and leave one decision flexible for weather or energy.

One anchor

Choose the city story that matters most before adding day trips.

One area at a time

Reduce backtracking by grouping nearby stops and meals.

One live check

Recheck access, weather, operator details and total cost shortly before travel.

From Bangkok

Trang Airport (TST) has daily flights from Bangkok (AirAsia from Don Mueang, Nok Air) from 1,800 THB one-way (1.5 hours). Airport is 15 minutes from city center — taxi 250 THB, songthaew 50 THB. By train from Hua Lamphong Station: 14 hours overnight, 2nd class sleeper 600-900 THB (recommended — saves a hotel night and deposits you at Trang station for 7 AM dim sum). By bus from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal: 12-14 hours (from 500 THB). From Krabi: 1.5 hours by minivan (250 THB, departs frequently from Krabi Town). From Hat Yai: 2 hours by bus or minivan (180-250 THB). From Satun (Koh Lipe access): 2 hours by minivan (250 THB).

Around Trang

  • Motorbike rental: 200-300 THB/day — best for reaching Ban Chao Mai pier, Le Khaw Kob Cave, and Kantang. Ask your guesthouse for trusted rental shops
  • Songthaew (shared trucks): Run between Trang City and surrounding districts for 40-100 THB. Not always reliable for tourist attractions — check frequency before depending on them
  • Motorbike taxis: Available around the train station for 40-80 THB for city trips. Negotiate before boarding
  • Private car hire: 800-1,200 THB/day including driver — the most flexible option for visiting multiple inland attractions in one day
  • Ban Chao Mai speedboats: Depart from Ban Chao Mai pier, 38 km south of Trang City. Most tour operators include minivan transfer from city hotels. 3-island speedboat tours ~1,500-2,000 THB per person
  • Kantang ferry: Regular ferry to Koh Libong from Kantang pier, 24 km south of Trang City (~100 THB one-way)
  • Grab: Does not reliably operate in Trang — use motorbike taxis or arrange private drivers through your hotel

Taste by place

Food decisions in Trang

Dish names and food areas are starting points. Recipe, allergens, opening times and stall availability remain a direct vendor check.

Dish signals

  • — Dim sum (Trang style) — Hokkien-Chinese bamboo-steamer dumplings unique to Trang: ha gao, siu mai, char siu bao, and egg tarts, served at Chinese shophouses from 5 AM (15-25 THB per piece, full breakfast 100-200 THB)
  • — Moo yang (Trang roast pork) — whole pig marinated 8 hours in five-spice and Chinese herbs, slow-roasted to crispy perfection. Served over rice or alongside dim sum (80-120 THB per portion)
  • — Kam chueang — Trang's unique coral-red dipping sauce made from cassava, vinegar, salt, and sugar. Every restaurant has their own recipe. Ask for it alongside your dim sum
  • — Khanom phing (Trang cake) — small crispy coconut-egg pastry cakes cooked in brass mold pans, sold on the street from 5-6 THB each. A uniquely Trang street food
  • — Khanom jeen tua khao — southern Thai fermented rice noodles served with a peanut and coconut curry sauce. Trang's local version is drier and nuttier than the Krabi version (60-80 THB)
  • — Pla kapong nueng manao — steamed sea bass with lime juice and chili, the definitive southern Thai fish dish. Always fresh in Trang Province (200-350 THB for a whole fish)
  • — Roti kanai — Indian-Muslim flatbread served with mutton curry or sweet condensed milk. Trang has a significant Malay-Muslim community near the train station (30-50 THB)

Area signals

  • — Thanon Ratchadamnoen (dim sum strip) — the legendary 5-6 AM breakfast street with 10+ shophouses serving dim sum and roast pork. Ruanthai Dim Sum and Phong Ocha are the most famous
  • — Trang Night Market, Thanon Wiset Kunthorn — nightly (6-10 PM) southern Thai street food at local prices: khanom phing, grilled seafood, curries, fresh fruit
  • — Train station area — Malay-Muslim food stalls around the train station serve roti canai, mutton curry, and nasi goreng, particularly busy from 7-11 AM
  • — Kantang fish market (24 km south) — buy direct from boats in the early morning. Grilled fresh catch at the waterfront restaurants for 100-200 THB

Ordering checks

  • — Dim sum stalls sell out early — arriving after 10 AM means the best pieces are gone. Set your alarm and go at 6-7 AM
  • — The kam chueang dipping sauce is unique to Trang — don't leave without trying every restaurant's version
  • — Southern Thai food is significantly spicier than central Thai — order 'mai pet' (not spicy) if you're sensitive to heat
  • — The Muslim food stalls near the train station have exceptional value breakfasts from 7 AM — roti canai with curry for 40 THB
  • — Island restaurants are convenient but expensive — everything comes by boat. Eat the big meals in Trang City and snack simply on the islands

Travel with context

Local etiquette without stereotypes.

Use these as respectful prompts, then follow signs and local instructions in the place itself.
  1. 01Dress modestly outside tourist areas — Trang has a significant Muslim population, particularly in fishing villages and on the islands. Cover shoulders and knees in villages
  2. 02Remove shoes before entering mosques, temples, and many traditional homes
  3. 03Ask permission before photographing the dim sum vendors and fishing communities — Trang's residents are not accustomed to being tourist subjects
  4. 04The Vegetarian Festival (October, 9th lunar month) involves intense religious ceremonies — observe respectfully and follow any instructions from organizers
  5. 05Tipping is appreciated but not expected: 20-50 THB at restaurants, 50-100 THB for boat drivers and guides, 100-200 THB for cave tour guides
  6. 06Stand during the national anthem played at 8 AM and 6 PM in public spaces including train stations and parks
