Travel Tips

  • The Mae Hong Son Loop from Chiang Mai is one of Thailand's most scenic drives (600 km). Take the northern route via Pai going and the southern route via Mae Sariang returning, or vice versa. Allow 3-5 days minimum.
  • A local guide is mandatory to enter Tham Lod Cave. Guides are available at the cave entrance for 150 baht per group (up to 3 people). Arrive before 3 PM to catch the spectacular swift colony at dusk.
  • The famous morning mist over Jong Kham Lake is best from November to February. Set your alarm for 6 AM and head to the lakeside viewpoint. The mist usually burns off by 9 AM.
