About Trat
The minivan from Bangkok dropped me in Trat town just as the afternoon rain was beginning, fat tropical drops drumming on the tin roofs of the shophouses lining Thana Charoen Road. Most travelers blow through Trat on their way to the Koh Chang ferry pier without stopping, and I nearly did the same. ...

Travel Tips
- Minivans from Bangkok's Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) take 5-6 hours to the Ao Thammachat ferry pier. Ferries run every 30-60 minutes during the day. You can also fly to Trat Airport (one hour from Bangkok) for a quicker but pricier option.
- Spend 3-4 days on Koh Chang for beaches and waterfalls, then take a speedboat to Koh Kood for 2-3 days of pure relaxation. Koh Mak makes a great stopover in between for its quiet simplicity.
- Many resorts and restaurants on the smaller islands close from June to October. Koh Chang stays open year-round but expect heavy rain, rough seas, and some beaches littered with debris during monsoon season.
