Best Restaurants

Khon Kaen Night Market (Fairy Plaza)

Isaan Street Food

The massive night market behind Fairy Plaza is ground zero for authentic Isaan street food: fiery som tum, juicy gai yang, sticky rice, larb, and fresh river fish. Multiple stalls competing for the best flavors.

Pla Chon Ton Khae

Isaan/Thai

Famous for its outstanding pla chon (snakehead fish) dishes and classic Isaan cuisine. Locals queue for the grilled fish and som tum combo. Simple setting, extraordinary flavors.

Ko-Fi Café Khon Kaen

Coffee/Modern Thai

Trendy university-area cafe serving specialty coffee alongside modern Thai dishes. A great spot for brunch with excellent presentation and flavors that respect local ingredients.

Travel Tips

  • Khon Kaen has its own airport with direct flights from Bangkok (1 hour). Overnight trains from Bangkok Hua Lamphong take 8-9 hours. VIP buses from Mo Chit take 6 hours. The high-speed rail line from Bangkok is under construction.
  • Isaan food is genuinely spicy - much more so than central Thai cuisine. When ordering som tum, say 'mai phet' (not spicy) or 'phet nit noi' (a little spicy) if you are not accustomed. But try the real thing at least once.
  • The silk weaving village of Chonnabot is 50 km south of Khon Kaen. Take a bus from the main terminal (30 baht, 1 hour). Buy mudmee silk directly from weavers at 50-70% less than Bangkok prices. The King Cobra Silk Village has the best selection.
