Mekong Adventure Episode 7: Mukdahan to Ubon (Finale)

Ubon Ratchathani sits at the far eastern edge of Thailand, where the Mun River meets the Mekong and Laos is close enough to see across the water. It is one of those Thai cities that few foreign travelers visit, which is precisely why visiting feels like such a discovery. I arrived on the overnight sleeper from Bangkok — twelve hours through the flat Isaan heartland — and stepped out into a city that felt entirely unlike the Thailand most tourists know. The air smelled of charcoal-grilled chicken and sticky rice, the streets were wide and leafy, and the morning light fell on a cityscape of graceful temples, French colonial-era shop houses, and the broad brown sweep of the Mun River. Nobody tried to sell me anything. Nobody called me friend. I was, for once, simply somewhere.

The city's crown jewel is the annual Candle Festival, or Khao Phansa, held each July to mark the beginning of Buddhist Lent. Communities across the province spend months carving enormous wax sculptures — some the size of buses — depicting scenes from the Jataka tales and Thai mythology. On the festival day, these monumental candles are paraded through the city on floats while thousands of people line the streets, dance, and celebrate. I was fortunate enough to visit during the festival, and the scale of the artistry left me speechless. One candle sculpture depicted a multi-armed deity surrounded by flames and heavenly beings, every detail — every feather, every finger, every coil of flame — carved from beeswax by hand over three months. The craftsmen, many of them monks, stood beside their creations with quiet pride, and the procession was accompanied by mor lam music, traditional Isaan singing that is simultaneously joyful and melancholic, the sound of the northeast.

Pha Taem National Park, about 100 kilometers east of the city along the Mekong, is where the landscape of Isaan reveals itself as something far more dramatic than the flat rice paddies most people imagine. The cliff edge drops vertically to the Mekong hundreds of meters below, and painted on the rock face are prehistoric paintings — hand prints, fish, geometric patterns — dating back 3,000 to 4,000 years. I stood on the cliff edge at dawn, the first person at the viewpoint that morning, and watched the sun rise over Laos, the Mekong shimmering below in gold and silver, the silence broken only by the cry of brahminy kites riding the thermals. It is one of the most powerful landscapes in Thailand, and I had it entirely to myself.

Sam Phan Bok, which translates to 'three thousand holes,' is Ubon's other natural wonder — a section of the Mekong riverbed carved by millennia of erosion into thousands of potholes, channels, and rock formations that emerge when the water level drops in the dry season (December to May). I visited in February and the exposed rock stretched out like a lunar landscape, the holes filled with turquoise pools and the entire scene framed by the wide Mekong with Laos on the far bank. Local families were picnicking on the rocks, children swimming in the natural pools, vendors grilling chicken on makeshift barbecues. There were perhaps fifty people spread across a site the size of several football fields. The comparison to the Grand Canyon is apt not in scale but in wonder — this is a place that makes you stand still and simply look.

Back in the city, the food is pure Isaan — bold, sour, spicy, and fermented. I ate larb moo (spicy minced pork salad) so fiery my lips went numb, som tam made with pla ra (fermented fish paste) that had a pungent depth of flavor no tourist-area version can match, and sticky rice that I pulled apart with my fingers in the traditional way. The night market along Ratchabut Road was my nightly ritual — a sprawling affair where I discovered kai yang (grilled chicken marinated in lemongrass and garlic), sai krok Isaan (fermented sausages), and a dessert of sweet sticky rice with fresh mango that cost 20 baht and tasted like everything good about Thailand distilled into a single dish. Ubon Ratchathani is not easy to reach and not eager to be discovered, and that is exactly what makes it extraordinary.
