Koh Tao

Beaches on Koh Tao
Sairee Beach
The longest beach on Koh Tao, stretching 1.7 kilometers along the west coast. This is the island's main hub with dive shops, beach bars, restaurants, and accommodation lining the shore. Great for sunset views and the social scene.
Shark Bay (Haad Tien)
Named after the harmless blacktip reef sharks that frequent the bay, this stunning beach offers exceptional snorkeling right from the shore. You can often spot sharks, turtles, and tropical fish in the clear shallow water.
Freedom Beach
A small, secluded beach accessible by a short hike or longtail boat. The coral reef just offshore makes it one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. Fewer visitors mean a more peaceful experience.
Tanote Bay
A picturesque bay on the east coast framed by large granite boulders that are perfect for cliff jumping. The snorkeling here is excellent with abundant marine life, and there are several restaurants perched on the hillside with panoramic views.
Mango Bay
A remote bay on the northern tip of the island with some of the best coral and marine life for snorkeling. Accessible by boat, longtail taxi, or a rugged road. The underwater visibility here is often the best on the island.
Things to Do on Koh Tao
PADI Open Water Dive Course
$$Koh Tao is the cheapest place in the world to get PADI certified, with Open Water courses starting from around ฿9,800 (including accommodation). The course takes 3-4 days and includes theory, pool sessions, and four open water dives. Over 70 dive schools operate on the island.
John-Suwan Viewpoint
FreeA moderately challenging hike through boulders and jungle to reach one of Koh Tao's most spectacular viewpoints, offering 360-degree views of Shark Bay and the southern coastline. The trail starts near Shark Bay and takes about 20 minutes.
Snorkeling Trip
$-$$Half-day and full-day snorkeling tours visit multiple spots around the island including Japanese Gardens, Hin Wong Bay, Aow Leuk, and the nearby Koh Nang Yuan. Equipment rental is included and no experience is needed.
Koh Nang Yuan
$Three small islands connected by a stunning white sandbar, located just a 10-minute boat ride from Koh Tao. The viewpoint offers one of Thailand's most photographed panoramas. Entry fee ฿100. No plastic bottles or fins allowed.

How to Get to Koh Tao

Flight to Surat Thani + Ferry
5-6 hoursBudget airlines to Surat Thani airport, then combined bus-ferry transfer to Koh Tao. Lomprayah and Seatran offer package deals. The best value option for most travelers.
Bus + Ferry
14-16 hoursOvernight bus from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal to Chumphon, then a morning ferry to Koh Tao (1.5-3 hours depending on boat type). The cheapest option.
