Hidden Gems

Chanthaburi Old Town Waterfront

"A beautifully preserved riverside community of pastel shophouses with French-Vietnamese architectural details. The narrow lanes hold independent cafes, art galleries, and old trading houses. Best explored on foot in the late afternoon light."

Khitung Waterfall

"A stunning jungle waterfall reached via a hiking trail through pristine forest. Far less visited than the famous Phlio Waterfall, Khitung offers a more adventurous and solitary experience with a natural swimming pool at the base."

Travel Tips

  • The gem market on Si Chan Road is active Friday to Sunday, with Saturday being the busiest and best day. Arrive by 10 AM for the full experience. Even if you're not buying, watching the dealers work is fascinating. Be cautious of scams — only buy from reputable dealers.
  • Peak durian season runs from April to July, when roadside stalls overflow with Monthong, Chanee, and Kradumthong varieties. The annual Fruit Festival in late May-early June is the best time to visit for fruit lovers. Premium Monthong durian sells for 150-400 THB per kilo.
  • Buses from Bangkok's Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) depart hourly and take 4-5 hours (250-300 THB). Driving takes about 3.5 hours via Route 344. There is no train service to Chanthaburi. The journey passes through Chonburi and Rayong provinces.
