Lampang is the only place in Thailand where horse-drawn carriages - rot maa in Thai - still operate as a legitimate mode of transport, a tradition dating back to the logging era when Burmese teak merchants brought their horse culture to this Wang River town. I climbed aboard a red-and-gold carriage near the Ratsadaphisek Bridge and spent a blissful hour clip-clopping along the riverfront, past century-old teak shophouses and Burmese-style temples. The driver, a third-generation carriage man named Lung Lek, told me his family has been running carriages since his grandfather arrived from Mandalay in the 1920s.

Lampang's crowning jewel is Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, which sits on a fortified hilltop about 18 kilometers south of the city center. This is arguably the finest example of Lanna temple architecture remaining in Thailand - a sprawling complex of ancient wooden viharns, some dating to the 15th century, with massive teak columns and crumbling laterite walls.
