Bangkok Becomes a City-Wide Art Stage

Mark your calendar: the fifth edition of the Bangkok Art Biennale (BAB 2026) runs from 29 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, turning temples, museums and public spaces across the capital into an enormous open-air gallery. Admission to most venues is free.

The Theme: Angels and Mara

This year's concept is called Angels and Mara. The name plays on Bangkok's full ceremonial title, which translates to "City of Angels." Curators juxtapose divine messengers from cultures around the world with Mara, the Buddhist figure who embodies desire, temptation and the darker side of human nature. The result is art that explores the tension between light and shadow, hope and fear.

The curatorial team is led by Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda, the Biennale's chief executive and artistic director, together with Adulaya Hoontrakul (Bangkok Art and Culture Centre), Rémy Jarry (Chulalongkorn University), Melanie Pocock (Ikon Gallery, Birmingham) and architect Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY Architecture.

Installations will be scattered across some of Bangkok's most iconic landmarks:

• Wat Arun and Wat Pho — contemporary art set against centuries-old temple architecture
• Wat Prayoon — a lesser-known but stunning riverside temple
• Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) — the city's main contemporary art hub near BTS National Stadium
• Museum Siam and the National Museum Bangkok — heritage buildings near the Grand Palace
• National Gallery of Thailand — right on Chao Phraya Road
• One Bangkok — the massive new mixed-use development in the CBD

Who Is Exhibiting

Confirmed artists include Mel Chin, Mandy El-Sayegh, Piero Golia, Sonia Hamza, Yasumasa Morimura, Thai photographer Manit Sriwanichpoom, and the Chinese duo Sun Yuan & Peng Yu, among many others. More names will be announced closer to the opening.
