Digital Nomad Visa (DTV)

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), commonly known as the Digital Nomad Visa, was introduced in June 2024 to attract remote workers, freelancers, and digital nomads. It is a 5-year multiple-entry visa that allows stays of up to 180 days per entry, with the option to extend each stay by another 180 days. This visa legally permits remote work for foreign employers or your own overseas business while living in Thailand.

Application Process

Apply Online or at Embassy

Apply through the Thai e-Visa system at thaievisa.go.th or visit your nearest Thai embassy. Upload all required documents including proof of remote work and financial evidence.

Pay the Visa Fee

Pay 10,000 THB via credit card (e-Visa) or as instructed by the embassy. This is a one-time fee for the full 5-year visa validity.

Receive Approval

Processing typically takes 10-15 business days. You will receive your e-Visa approval via email or collect the visa sticker from the embassy.

Enter Thailand

Present your DTV visa at immigration upon arrival. You will receive a 180-day stamp. You can work remotely legally from day one.

Can I work for a Thai company on the DTV visa?

No, the DTV visa only permits remote work for foreign employers or your own overseas business. Working for a Thai company or earning income from Thai sources requires a separate work permit and a Non-B visa.

Do I need to pay taxes in Thailand on the DTV?

Thailand taxes income based on residency rules. If you stay more than 180 days in a calendar year, you may be considered a tax resident. However, income from foreign sources that is not remitted to Thailand is generally not taxed. Consult a tax advisor for your specific situation, as international tax treaties (including the Netherlands-Thailand treaty) may apply.

Can my family join me on the DTV visa?

Yes, your spouse and children under 20 can apply for their own DTV visas as dependents. Each family member needs to submit a separate application with the same financial requirements, plus proof of the family relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificates).

What qualifies as proof of remote work?

Acceptable proof includes: an employment contract showing remote work arrangement with a foreign company, freelance platform profiles with earnings history (Upwork, Fiverr, etc.), foreign business registration documents, client contracts, or a letter from your employer confirming remote work arrangement.

Can I convert my visa-free entry to a DTV visa from inside Thailand?

No, the DTV visa must be applied for outside of Thailand, either at a Thai embassy or through the e-Visa system. You cannot convert a visa-free entry or any other visa type to a DTV from within Thailand.
