Thailand Targets 10% Tourism Growth in 2026 After a Tough 2025
What Happened in 2025
Thailand's tourism industry had a difficult 2025. Foreign tourist arrivals fell by 7.23 percent compared to the previous year, with the annual total settling at roughly 33 million visitors according to Bloomberg. A combination of factors contributed to the decline, including global economic uncertainty, regional competition from Vietnam and Indonesia, and disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. For a broader look at what analysts predicted heading into this year, see Thailand Tourism 2026: Hopes, Pressure and Uncertainty.
The 2026 Recovery Target
Thai tourism authorities have responded with an ambitious plan. The official target for 2026 is more than 10 percent growth in international arrivals, which would bring visitor numbers back above the 36 million mark. The Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) has stressed that the recovery should focus on quality rather than quantity, encouraging higher-spending tourists rather than simply chasing volume. This philosophy is at the heart of the TAT's Tourism Next strategy: Value Over Volume, which runs alongside the recovery push. The wider economic ambition is also covered in Thailand's 3 Trillion Baht Tourism Target.
Early Numbers Show Mixed Results
Between 1 January and mid-March 2026, Thailand welcomed over 7.4 million international visitors โ see the full breakdown in Thailand Tourism: 7 Million Visitors in Early 2026. While the figure is substantial, it represents a 4.4 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2025. Arrivals from Europe and the Middle East have been particularly affected, dropping by around 18 percent due to ongoing tensions and flight disruptions in the region.
Shifting Strategy: Short-Haul Markets
To compensate for the shortfall in long-haul visitors, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pivoting its marketing budget toward short-haul Asian markets. China, India, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan are being targeted with increased promotional campaigns. These markets offer larger volumes of travellers and are less affected by the Middle East situation.
Domestic tourism is also getting a boost. The Thailand Tourism Festival 2026, held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in late March, features special travel packages and discounts from over 30 partner organisations to encourage Thai residents to explore their own country. The wider push to stimulate domestic travel is part of TAT's domestic tourism stimulus programme.
What Travellers Should Know
For international visitors, the shift toward quality tourism could mean better services and infrastructure improvements at popular destinations. Thailand is investing in sustainable tourism certifications, upgrading transport links, and encouraging businesses to improve their offerings. The Thailand Star Green Tourism accreditation is one of the schemes rewarding responsible operators.
The flip side is that some costs may rise. Thai carriers have already flagged potential fare increases due to fuel costs, and the government is considering adjustments to visa policies. However, Thailand remains one of the most affordable destinations in Southeast Asia, and the strong competition among hotels, airlines and tour operators continues to keep prices reasonable for most budgets.
