About Chumphon

Most travelers experience Chumphon as a blur — a bus station, a ferry pier, and the blur of a night transfer on the way to Koh Tao. I almost made the same mistake. My plan was to catch the overnight train from Bangkok, grab the morning Lomprayah catamaran, and be snorkeling off Koh Tao by lunchtime....

Hidden Gems

Ao Thung Makham Bay

"A sheltered bay south of town where fishing communities serve the morning's catch at stilted waterfront restaurants. Some of the freshest and cheapest seafood on the Gulf coast, with zero tourist presence."

Khao Matsee Viewpoint

"A hilltop viewpoint near Pak Nam Chumphon offering panoramic views of the coastline, river estuary, and offshore islands. Best at sunset when the whole Gulf turns golden. Rarely visited by anyone except local joggers."

Top Attractions

1

Mu Ko Chumphon National Park

2

Travel Tips

  • Lomprayah catamaran departs from Thung Makham pier at 7:00 AM and 1:00 PM daily (600-700 THB, 1.5-2 hours). Songserm and night boats are cheaper but slower. Book online in advance during peak season (Dec-Feb).
  • The train station is in town center, but the ferry pier is 25 km away. Most ferry companies offer free shuttle buses — check your ticket for transfer details. Alternatively, a motorbike taxi costs about 300-400 THB.
  • Consistent winds blow at Thung Wua Laen from December to March, making it the best kiteboarding spot on the Gulf coast. Several schools offer beginner lessons (2,000-3,000 THB for 2 hours). Equipment rental is available.
