Travel Tips

  • The Red Lotus Sea (Talay Bua Daeng) blooms from December to February only. Visit between 6 AM and 11 AM when the flowers are fully open. Hire a longtail boat at the pier in Kumphawapi (300-500 baht per boat for 1-2 hours). The lake is 50 km south of the city.
  • Ban Chiang is 50 km east of Udon Thani. Take a bus from Bus Terminal 1 to Ban Chiang village (50 baht, 1 hour). The museum is open 9 AM - 4 PM daily, admission 150 baht for foreigners. Allow 2-3 hours for the museum and excavation site.
  • Udon Thani is only 55 km from the Friendship Bridge to Vientiane, Laos. Buses run regularly from the bus terminal (50 baht). You can get a Laos visa on arrival at the bridge. Many travelers use Udon Thani as a base for Laos day trips.
