Fresh Coconut Water
น้ำมะพร้าว
Fresh Coconut Water (น้ำมะพร้าว, Nam Maprao) is one of the most refreshing and culturally significant beverages in Thailand, sold by vendors across the country from tropical beaches to Bangkok street corners. Thailand is one of the world's leading coconut producers, and the young green coconuts served fresh — chilled and with a straw inserted directly into the fruit — represent one of the simplest and most satisfying pleasures of Thai travel. The most prized variety grown in Thailand is 'Nam Hom' (fragrant water), cultivated primarily in Ratchaburi province, whose coconuts are renowned for their naturally sweet, aromatic water with a delicate floral note. Young coconuts (as opposed to mature brown coconuts) are harvested before they ripen, when they are at their most hydrating — typically at 5–7 months. The clear liquid inside contains naturally occurring electrolytes including potassium (600mg per cup), magnesium, sodium, and calcium, making it an effective natural isotonic drink for rehydration after exercise or heat exposure. A single young coconut contains approximately 250–350ml of water. In Thai tradition, young coconuts are more than just a drink — they are offered to guests as a sign of hospitality and used in Buddhist ceremonies and merit-making rituals. Coconut vendors and 7-Eleven stores sell fresh-packaged Nam Hom coconuts for 20–40 baht; beach vendors charging 50–70 baht for a whole chilled green coconut with a straw. The soft white jelly ('coconut meat') inside young coconuts can be scooped out and eaten as a snack.
