Thailand Launches 'The New Thailand' Vision at ITB Berlin 2026
A Fresh Direction for Thai Tourism
Thailand's Tourism Authority (TAT) used ITB Berlin 2026 β held from 3 to 5 March at Berlin ExpoCenter City β to unveil a bold new positioning for the Kingdom. Under the banner 'The New Thailand' and the tagline 'Unforgettable Experience: Healing is the New Luxury', the campaign signals a deliberate shift away from mass tourism towards wellness, sustainability, and deeper cultural connection.
More than 165 Thai tourism operators joined the delegation, making it one of the largest national contingents at Europe's biggest travel trade show.
What 'The New Thailand' Means for Visitors
The campaign highlights destinations that most first-time visitors overlook. TAT is actively promoting Sukhothai, Nan, Satun, and Trang as sustainable alternatives to the well-trodden BangkokβPhuketβChiang Mai circuit. Each province offers a mix of UNESCO heritage, pristine nature, and community-based tourism experiences that are hard to find in the usual guidebooks. The eco-glamping retreat in Nan is a perfect example of the kind of experience TAT is championing.
For wellness travellers, TAT introduced 20 curated low-carbon travel routes that weave together gastronomy, regional identity, and holistic wellbeing. The Saneh Thai Cafe, a pop-up inside the Thailand pavilion, brought this concept to life under the themes "Wellness on a Plate" and "Worth-Life Balance" β giving trade visitors a taste of the food-as-medicine philosophy that underpins much of traditional Thai cuisine. Thailand's best wellness retreats in 2026 and yoga retreats on Koh Samui and Koh Phangan exemplify this vision.
Sustainability Gets Concrete Targets
This is not just marketing language. TAT backed the vision with 10 Krabi: Travel With Care itineraries and a certification framework that includes STGs STAR ratings, Thailand Tourism Awards, and Carbon Footprint (CF) Hotel standards. These tools give travellers a way to verify that the hotels and tours they book meet genuine environmental benchmarks. The Thailand Good Travel certification and Thailand Star Green Tourism accreditation are part of this same push.
A Bigger Push in Europe
TAT extended its reach beyond the trade show floor with the Amazing Thailand Fest 2026 β The Wholesome Taste of Thai, hosted at Berlin's iconic KaDeWe department store from 2 to 14 March. The event featured Thai street food, wellness demonstrations, and cultural showcases aimed at European consumers considering their next holiday.
What This Means for Your Next Trip
If you have already visited Bangkok and the islands, 'The New Thailand' gives you a roadmap for a very different kind of trip. Think cycling through the ancient ruins of Sukhothai, staying in eco-certified lodges in Nan's forested highlands, or kayaking through the sea caves of Satun β all with a lower carbon footprint and a stronger connection to local communities. The Chiang Dao stargazing eco-lodges in northern Thailand are a great starting point.
Thailand's tourism industry generated 368 billion baht in the first quarter of 2026 alone, proving that the country remains one of Asia's most popular destinations. The difference now is that the Kingdom is actively steering visitors towards experiences that benefit both travellers and the places they visit.
