U-Tapao Pattaya Airport Is Getting New Flights and a Second Runway in 2026
Pattaya Finally Gets Serious About Its Airport
For years, most travellers heading to Pattaya or the eastern seaboard flew into Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi and endured a two-hour-plus road transfer. U-Tapao Rayong-Pattaya International Airport has always been the closer alternative, but limited flight options kept it under the radar. That is changing fast in 2026. For context on Thailand's broader aviation boom, see our piece on new airline routes to Thailand in 2026.
New Direct Routes
Several airlines are adding or expanding service into U-Tapao this year:
- SCAT Airlines is launching a direct route from Almaty, Kazakhstan to Pattaya β the first nonstop link between Central Asia and Thailand's eastern coast. Demand from Kazakh and Central Asian tourists has been growing steadily, and this route cuts out the Bangkok layover entirely.
- AirAsia is introducing direct flights from Pattaya to Chinese cities including Chengdu, Nanning, and Haikou, tapping into the Chinese market's renewed appetite for Thai beach destinations. See the AirAsia TAT free flights campaign for related promotional activity.
- Kuala Lumpur connections via AirAsia continue to strengthen, giving Malaysian travellers a fast hop to Pattaya's beaches and nightlife.
For visitors, more routes into U-Tapao mean cheaper fares and shorter travel days. The airport is only about 35 kilometres from central Pattaya, compared to roughly 140 kilometres from Suvarnabhumi. Check Thai carriers fuel surcharge updates that may affect your fare.
Second Runway Under Construction
Construction of a second runway began in November 2025. The new strip will measure 3,505 metres and sit 1,140 metres from the existing runway β wide enough separation to handle simultaneous operations. Once completed, the airport is designed to manage at least 70 flights per hour, a massive jump from its current capacity.
This is part of a larger 290-billion-baht aviation city masterplan that aims to turn U-Tapao into Thailand's third major international gateway alongside Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. The first phase of the aviation city is expected to be operational by 2028. This is closely related to Thailand's broader double-track railway and infrastructure projects for 2026.
High-Speed Rail Connection
The expansion ties directly into the three-airport high-speed rail project linking Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao. When that line opens, travellers will be able to reach Pattaya from central Bangkok in under an hour by train, making U-Tapao even more accessible for both domestic and international passengers. See our Thailand three-airport high-speed rail 2026 update for the full timeline and what it means for travellers.
What This Means for Your Trip
If you are planning a Pattaya, Rayong, or Koh Samet trip in 2026, check U-Tapao flight availability before defaulting to Bangkok. Airlines are offering promotional fares on new routes, and skipping the capital saves you both time and taxi money. The airport is small, immigration queues are short, and you can be on the beach within 45 minutes of landing.
