The drive from Bangkok to Rayong takes under three hours along the Motorway, and somewhere past Chonburi the landscape shifts from industrial estates to fruit orchards and coconut palms. I pulled off the highway near Ban Phe to follow hand-painted signs advertising "durian, rambutan, mangosteen" and found myself in a roadside orchard where a farmer named Somchai let me pick rambutans straight from the tree. But most visitors come to Rayong for one reason: Koh Samet. The speedboat from Ban Phe pier takes twenty minutes, and as the island's white crescents of sand appeared through the spray, I felt that familiar thrill of island arrival. Koh Samet occupies a sweet spot in the Thai island spectrum: developed enough for comfortable accommodation and decent restaurants, yet small enough that a motorbike can circle the whole island in an hour. I based myself at Ao Wong Duean, a horseshoe bay on the eastern coast, where the turquoise water was warm as a bath and the sand was the fine white powder that postcards promise but rarely deliver.

Back on the mainland, Mae Ramphueng Beach surprised me with its length and emptiness. This twelve-kilometer stretch of golden sand runs south from the fishing village of Paknam Rayong, and on a Tuesday morning I walked for an hour without seeing another tourist. Fishing boats lined the shore near the village end, and a row of seafood restaurants with plastic chairs and concrete floors served the catch of the day at prices that made me reconsider ever eating in Bangkok again. I ordered pla kapong neung manao, steamed sea bass with lime and chili, so fresh the flesh was translucent, and a plate of fried squid with garlic that arrived sizzling from the wok.

Rayong town itself is a functional Thai provincial city, not particularly scenic but with a genuine local character. The Rayong Aquarium at the east end of Mae Ramphueng Beach is a modest but educational attraction, particularly for families. The morning market in town on Sukhumvit Road is a riot of color: piles of shrimp paste, Thailand's famous nam pla ra fermented fish sauce that Rayong producers are known for, baskets of dried squid, and mountains of the tropical fruits for which the province is celebrated. I tasted som tum made with Rayong shrimp paste at a stall and nearly cried from the complexity of its fermented, spicy, sour flavor.

What sets Rayong apart is its accessibility and authenticity. Unlike Pattaya an hour north, Rayong has not been overtaken by mass tourism, yet it is close enough to Bangkok for a genuine weekend escape. The Khao Laem Ya-Mu Ko Samet National Park protects both the island and a beautiful stretch of rocky mainland coast with tide pools, viewpoints, and easy hiking trails. On my last evening, I sat on the rocks at the Khao Laem Ya headland watching the sun sink into the Gulf of Thailand, fishing boats silhouetted against the amber sky, and thought that sometimes the best destinations in Thailand are the ones nobody tells you about.
