The city itself sits along a river, its waterfront lined with pastel-colored shophouses that speak of a history far more complex than most Thai towns: French occupation, Vietnamese immigration, Chinese trade, and a gem industry that draws buyers from around the world every weekend.

The Gem Market on Si Chan Road is unlike anything I have encountered elsewhere in Thailand. Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the narrow street and its surrounding lanes transform into an open-air gemstone trading floor where dealers spread rubies, sapphires, and semi-precious stones on folding tables, examine them under loupes, and negotiate in a babel of Thai, Khmer, Burmese, and English. I stood mesmerized watching a dealer hold a deep red ruby up to the afternoon sun, the light passing through the stone like liquid fire. Chanthaburi has been the center of the Thai gem trade for over a century — the surrounding hills once yielded sapphires and rubies directly from the earth, and though the local mines are largely exhausted, the expertise remains. Dealers now import rough stones from Madagascar, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka, cutting and polishing them in workshops you can hear ticking and grinding behind the shophouse facades.
