Fisherman's Village in Bophut became my favorite evening ritual. Every Friday night the narrow street transforms into a walking market where local families set up stalls selling grilled prawns, som tam, and coconut pancakes. I befriended a vendor named Khun Noi who made extraordinary pad kra pao — holy basil stir-fry with a fiery kick that cleared my sinuses and made me order a second plate immediately. Between the market stalls, boutique shops sell handmade jewelry and Thai silk, and live bands play on small stages. The atmosphere is worlds apart from the thumping clubs of Chaweng — it is relaxed, familial, and genuinely local.

Koh Samui rewards those who venture beyond the main beaches. I rented a scooter and traced the island's ring road south to Lamai Beach, where the bizarre Hin Ta and Hin Yai rock formations jut from the shore, then continued to the quiet Lipa Noi coast where I had an entire beach to myself for an afternoon. In the hilly interior, the Na Muang waterfalls cascade into natural swimming pools surrounded by jungle, and the Secret Buddha Garden on the island's highest peak hides dozens of stone sculptures among the moss and ferns. At sunset I parked at Laem Sor Pagoda, a golden chedi on the island's southern tip, and watched the sky turn from gold to violet with nothing but the sound of cicadas for company. Koh Samui is an island that gives you exactly the experience you seek — wild or luxurious, raucous or serene — and always, always beautiful.
