I stepped out of the train station on Narai Maharat Road and was immediately confronted by a troop of macaque monkeys perched on the station roof, grooming each other with an air of complete indifference to the humans below. Within thirty seconds, a bold juvenile had swiped a corn cob from a startled vendor and was feasting on a power line overhead. Welcome to Lopburi, the monkey city of Thailand, where several thousand crab-eating macaques rule the old town like tiny, furry landlords.

The heart of the monkey kingdom is Prang Sam Yot, the stunning 13th-century Khmer temple that rises in three interconnected towers above the railway roundabout. Built as a Hindu shrine and later converted to Buddhist use, its laterite and sandstone prangs are magnificent examples of Bayon-style architecture, but most visitors come for the spectacle: hundreds of macaques swinging from every ledge, scampering through window openings, and posing for photos with tourists who have purchased bags of sunflower seeds from local vendors. I tucked my sunglasses into my bag, having been warned that the monkeys are expert thieves, and spent a fascinated hour watching their social dynamics play out against a backdrop of ancient stone.

But Lopburi has far more to offer than its simian celebrities. King Narai Ratchaniwet Palace, a grand 17th-century compound just a ten-minute walk from the monkey temple, tells the story of one of Siam's most cosmopolitan monarchs. King Narai the Great welcomed Persian, French, and Chinese ambassadors here, and the palace walls still bear the graceful fusion of Thai, Khmer, and European architectural styles. I wandered through the Dusit Sawan Thanya Maha Prasat reception hall, where the pointed arches looked almost Gothic, while bougainvillea cascaded over the old laterite walls in brilliant magenta. The attached Narai National Museum houses a fascinating collection of artifacts from the Lopburi period, including delicate Khmer-era bronze Buddhas that rival anything in Bangkok's national collection.

The town itself has a sleepy, authentic charm that feels refreshingly untouched by mass tourism. I had lunch at a simple rice shop on Ratchadamnoen Road, where the owner served me a plate of khao man gai, the deceptively simple chicken rice, with a clarity of broth and tenderness of meat that put Bangkok versions to shame. Lopburi's night market near Narai Maharat Road is small but genuine, with local families gathering around grilled chicken vendors and som tum mortar-and-pestle stalls. The annual Monkey Buffet Festival, held in late November, transforms the area around Prang Sam Yot into a surreal banquet where mountains of fruit and vegetables are laid out for the macaques, drawing international media attention.

For me, Lopburi's greatest appeal is its position as a living layer cake of Thai history. Beneath the monkey antics lies a city that has been continuously inhabited for over a thousand years, from Dvaravati through Khmer to Ayutthaya periods. The sunflower fields that surround the city in November and December create a golden landscape that has become a photography destination in its own right. Lopburi may be a day trip from Bangkok for most visitors, but those who stay overnight discover a quiet provincial town with genuine warmth and a history that runs as deep as anywhere in Thailand.
