The Mekong flows wide and steady here, with Laos visible on the opposite bank, and there's a deep sense of being somewhere genuinely remote. The main reason to come is Three Whale Rock (Hin Sam Wan), and it absolutely lives up to the journey. These are not just any rocks — they're 75-million-year-old red sandstone formations from the Cretaceous period, given their deep, Mars-like red color by iron oxide deposits. Erosion over millions of years has sculpted them into remarkably smooth, whale-shaped forms. When the mist rolls through the surrounding rainforest, it creates an atmosphere that is genuinely Jurassic Park-like — ancient, primeval, and completely unlike anything else in Thailand. A truck takes you up through the park to four or five different viewpoints, each revealing new formations and panoramic views across the Mekong to Laos. After rain, when clouds wrap around the sandstone pillars and the red rock glistens, it's one of the most atmospheric sights in all of Southeast Asia. The ride through the countryside to get here is half the experience — bamboo bridges, lotus flowers on the river, and that beautiful slow pace of rural Isaan life.
