Lampang is the only place in Thailand where horse-drawn carriages - rot maa in Thai - still operate as a legitimate mode of transport, a tradition dating back to the logging era when Burmese teak merchants brought their horse culture to this Wang River town. I climbed aboard a red-and-gold carriage near the Ratsadaphisek Bridge and spent a blissful hour clip-clopping along the riverfront, past century-old teak shophouses and Burmese-style temples. The driver, a third-generation carriage man named Lung Lek, told me his family has been running carriages since his grandfather arrived from Mandalay in the 1920s.

Lampang's crowning jewel is Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, which sits on a fortified hilltop about 18 kilometers south of the city center. This is arguably the finest example of Lanna temple architecture remaining in Thailand - a sprawling complex of ancient wooden viharns, some dating to the 15th century, with massive teak columns and crumbling laterite walls. The main viharn houses a revered Chiang Saen-era Buddha image, and in a small chapel behind the main hall, you can witness an astonishing natural phenomenon: a camera obscura effect where light enters through a tiny hole and projects an inverted image of the chedi onto a white cloth. A monk demonstrated this for me, and seeing the golden chedi appear upside-down in the darkness felt genuinely magical.

The Thai Elephant Conservation Center in Hang Chat district, about 30 kilometers west of Lampang, is Thailand's oldest and most respected elephant facility. Unlike the tourist-oriented elephant camps that have proliferated elsewhere, this government-run center focuses on veterinary care, breeding, and rehabilitation of sick and injured elephants. I spent a morning watching the elephant hospital at work - a veterinarian was treating an elephant that had stepped on a landmine near the Myanmar border. The center also runs a mahout training program where you can learn traditional elephant care over several days. Watching baby elephants play in the river while their mothers looked on was genuinely heartwarming.

Lampang's old town along Talad Gao Road and the Wang River is a treasure trove of Burmese-influenced architecture. The Saturday and Sunday Kad Kong Ta Walking Street market transforms the riverside into a festival of local food, crafts, and live music. I gorged myself on Lampang's signature dish - khao tang na tang, crispy rice crackers with savory dip - and browsed stalls selling the city's famous ceramics, the rooster-emblazoned bowls known as 'Lampang chicken bowls' that you find in kitchens across Thailand. What struck me most about Lampang was the sense of living history without the museumification that has overtaken places like Sukhothai or Ayutthaya. Here, monks still chant in 500-year-old viharns, carriage drivers still navigate the same streets their grandfathers did, and ceramic artisans still shape clay using techniques passed down through generations. The city moves at its own rhythm - unhurried, unpretentious, and genuinely welcoming to the few travelers who venture off the Chiang Mai trail.
