My hotel was on Ratchadamnoen Road, the historic spine of the city, and within five minutes of checking in I was eating the most extraordinary khanom jeen — rice noodles with a rich, spicy fish curry — at a shophouse restaurant where no one spoke a word of English and the bill came to 35 baht.

Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan is the reason most Thai people visit Nakhon, and it genuinely deserves its status as one of the most important temples in the country. The great chedi, covered in gold and rising over 55 meters above the temple complex, is visible from across the city and has stood here in some form since the 8th century. I arrived at dawn and found the cloisters already alive with devotees making merit, offering lotus flowers and gold leaf to the rows of Buddha images.
