Red Lotus Sea in Udon Thani Breaks Visitor Records Thanks to the 'Lisa Effect'

A Pink Lake Goes Viral

Nong Han Lake in Kumphawapi district, Udon Thani, has long been known locally as the "Red Lotus Sea" for the millions of pink water lilies that carpet its surface each winter. The Red Lotus Sea is easily the province's most photographed natural attraction. But the 2025-2026 bloom season has been unlike any before. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) forecasts no fewer than 120,000 visitors this season β€” an all-time record β€” driven largely by BLACKPINK member Lalisa "Lisa" Manobal's role as the Amazing Thailand Ambassador.

How the Lisa Effect Transformed Udon Thani

TAT's "Amazing Thailand x LISA" campaign, launched in late January 2026, featured footage of Lisa visiting the Red Lotus Sea. The video went viral almost immediately β€” AirAsia even ran a free flights promotion tied to the Lisa campaign. Between December 1, 2025, and January 25, 2026, total visitor numbers reached 50,306, split nearly evenly between Thai visitors (51.73 percent) and international tourists (48.27 percent) from countries including China, Laos, Germany, and Japan.

Local boat operators at Ban Diam Pier have felt the surge firsthand. Daily boat trips jumped from an average of around 100 to over 400, with a fleet of 95 boats now running to keep up with demand. The economic impact extends beyond boat rides β€” nearby homestays, restaurants, and souvenir stalls in Kumphawapi have all reported sharp increases in revenue.

Planning Your Visit

The Red Lotus Sea bloom season typically runs from November through February, with peak flowering in December and January. Visitors should arrive early in the morning, ideally between 6:00 and 9:00 AM, when the flowers are fully open and the light is best for photography. Check the best time to visit Udon Thani for a full month-by-month weather and crowd breakdown.

Udon Thani is served by its own international airport with direct flights from Bangkok (about one hour), Chiang Mai, and several regional destinations. Check new airline routes to Thailand in 2026 for the latest connectivity options. From the city centre, Nong Han Lake is roughly a 45-minute drive south. The best hotels in Udon Thani include options close to the city centre that work well as a base for a dawn visit to the lake.

Beyond the Lotus Fields

The Lisa Effect has done more than boost one lake's visitor numbers. It has put the entire Isaan region β€” Thailand's vast northeastern plateau, often overlooked by international tourists β€” on the travel map. TAT officials hope the momentum will encourage travellers to explore other Isaan highlights such as the Naga Fireballs of Nong Khai, the Khmer temples of Buriram, and the silk-weaving villages of Khon Kaen. The annual Bun Bang Fai rocket festival in Yasothon is another spectacular Isaan event worth combining with a northern loop. Travellers with more time can also explore the Mekong River provinces or take a Mekong River cruise for a unique perspective on the northeast. For the full northeast experience, browse top attractions in Udon Thani to plan a multi-day stay around the province.

For travellers who missed the 2025-2026 bloom, the lotus flowers will return again in November 2026. Read the Royal Ploughing Ceremony guide if you are planning a May visit to Thailand and want to combine cultural events in Bangkok with a northeast side trip.
